CHAPTER 01 / 12

Start smaller than you think.

Your first useful app can be a single page. You do not need to understand every technology before you begin.

A safe first idea

Build a useful-links page for a fictional school: five public resources, short descriptions, categories and a search box. Picture a new colleague finding the right link in seconds. Use made-up school details; leave pupil records and submissions for a later project.

Ask for a gentle introduction

TRY THIS PROMPT

I have never used a coding tool or terminal. I want to build a small useful-links page for a fictional school. Help me get ready on my computer, one step at a time. Ask which operating system I use. Explain each action before I do it. Do not install anything, connect accounts or publish yet. Keep all work in a new folder.

You bring the school knowledge

  • The coding partner can work on files, explain choices and help diagnose errors.
  • You decide the purpose, audience and boundaries.
  • You check the result as a user. A convincing preview alone does not establish that an app is ready for school use.

Before the first build

Check off as you go · resets when you leave this page0 / 5 ready

Keep the first step simple

Start with public information. Accounts, pupil data, uploads, payments and automatic emails add responsibilities and testing. Introduce them when the purpose requires them and your school has reviewed the design.
